Airports in Central Germany Continue to Grow in the First Half of 2010
Passenger numbers at Leipzig/Halle Airport and Dresden International show a positive trend - Freight handling at Leipzig/Halle is growing steadily - Dresden expands its range of flights
The two airports operated by Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding, Leipzig/Halle and Dresden International, processed a total of 1,916,511 passengers in the first half of 2010. In comparison with the same crisis-stricken period last year, this represents a modest growth of 1.9 percent. In the same period, the number of aircraft movements increased by 2.6 percent to 46,344 takeoffs and landings. In view of the turbulence that the airline industry has had to cope with this year, the latest figures point to a very positive balance overall: as a result of the eruption of the volcano in Iceland and the consequent closure of the airspace over much of Europe alone, 1,362 aircraft movements were cancelled at airports in central Germany.
Leipzig/Halle Airport reported 1,079,475 passengers in the first six months of this year, which shows little change over the same period last year. In particular, with 249,770 passengers in June, volume grew by 2.6 percent due to the increased demand for domestic flights. At peak times during the summer season, the airport expects to handle up to 9,000 arrivals and departures a day.
Freight volume at Leipzig/Halle in the first half of 2010 also exceeded 300,000 tonnes for the first time. The airport handled a total of 304,760 tonnes of freight - an increase of 28.7 percent over the same period last year. With 29,573 takeoffs and landings, the airport also recorded a 3.8 percent rise in aircraft movements. The 5,794 takeoffs and landings in June alone are commensurate with strong growth of 13.7 percent.
In the six months of 2010, 837,036 passengers used Dresden International Airport, a 4.6 percent increase in passenger volume over the same period in 2009. In June, the airport processed 185,262 passengers, a significant increase of 9.5 percent. This was due to the steady expansion of the range of services as well as to increased demand for holiday flights. Dresden International Airport recorded a total of 16,771 aircraft movements - a modest increase of 0.5 percent compared to the first half of last year. There were 3,511 takeoffs and landings in June, an increase of ten percent.
