Traffic Report for the Central German Airports in the Crisis Year of 2009

Traffic developments at the Central German airports exceeded the average figures for the sector - Leipzig/Halle set a new record for the amount of freight handled - passenger and traffic volumes at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden differed widely

4,144,308 passengers in all passed through the two commercial airports that operate under the umbrella of the Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding, Leipzig/Halle Airport and Dresden International, last year. The decline in numbers (4.1 percent) at the two airports over the previous 12 months is probably better than the national German average for this sector, according to information supplied by the German Airports Association (ADV). Aircraft movements within the group fell by 2 percent to a total figure of 94,948 flights.

Leipzig/Halle Airport was able to set a new freight record. The airport had handled 524,082.7 tonnes by the end of the year. This represents an increase of 18.5 percent over the figures for the same period in the previous year.  This ongoing growth enabled the airport to assert its position to a significant degree despite the economic difficulties and it was able to further consolidate its ranking as the third most important logistics airport in Germany.

Passenger numbers at the airport declined slightly by 1.7 percent to 2,421,382. But the airport was able to increase traffic volumes by 0.4 percent to 60,150 take-offs and landings.

Passenger numbers at Dresden International Airport fell by 7.4 percent to 1,722,926 as a result of the difficult economic conditions. But Dresden Airport still managed to successfully expand its network of routes with two new direct flights to Moscow Sheremetyevo and Warsaw. The volume of traffic at Dresden fell by 5.9 percent to 34,798 take-offs and landings in 2009.

Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding is the overall trade name used by Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, a company operated by the public sector. The group has several subsidiary companies: Leipzig/Halle Airport, Dresden International, PortGround and EasternAirCargo.
