Central German Airports Continue Their Successful Course
Passenger numbers at Dresden International Airport move in a positive direction – freight volumes at Leipzig/Halle continue to show double digit growth
The two commercial airports operated under the umbrella of Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding, Leipzig/Halle Airport and Dresden International, had registered 3,196,204 passengers overall by the end of September 2010. This represents an increase of 2 percent when compared to the same period in the previous year, which was marked by economic difficulties. The airports were able to increase the number of aircraft movements to 73,413 take-offs and landings, a rise of 2.6 percent.
Passenger numbers at Leipzig/Halle Airport, which was able to hold its own above the average German figure for the sector during the crisis in the previous year, fell by 1.4 percent overall during the first nine months of this year, when compared to the same period in 2009. 1,816,726 passengers had passed through the airport by the end of September. 27 airlines operated as many as 259 flights to 53 destinations in 17 countries each week during the high season.
Freight volumes at Leipzig/Halle Airport once again set a new record with significant growth of 29.2 percent. 476,906 tonnes of air freight were handled at the European cargo hub from January until September for the first time. The number of take-offs and landings rose by 3.5 percent during the same period to 46,463 aircraft movements.
1,379,478 passengers used Dresden International Airport during the past nine months. This represents an increase of 6.7 percent compared to the slump suffered in the economic crisis during the same period in the previous year. Dresden Airport operated approx. 290 flights to 54 destinations in 17 countries each week during the high season. The airport had registered 26,950 aircraft movements during the first nine months of 2010. This is an increase of 1.3 percent over the same period in the previous year.
